Project Descriptions

This an advanced GIS class for students to learn how to create rigorous spatial models. The project should include a scientific question that requires a statistically based spatial model. At the same time, the students must complete the project within one term. This means the project must be an appropriate size that can be completed, reviewed, and presented in a very tight time frame. Also, students will need to start immediately on the first two phases of the project; acquiring data and researching data management and/or modeling techniques appropriate for their field.

Students are encouraged work on projects that are a part of their graduate research. They are also encouraged to work in teams. The quantity of work will be expected to be greater with projects that are a part of their existing research or are executed as teams. Students will receive points for working as teams because of the time and challenges involved.

The type of data and modeling within students projects will vary based on their area of interest. Because of this, the students will be using different data management approaches and modeling techniques. The class will provide background in spatial modeling but much of the specifics will be up to each student to research and implement.
