Creating a Hill Shade (shaded reflief) In BlueSpray

A great many maps will have a "hill shade" as a background layer. These are very easy to do once you have a good quality DEM. BlueSpray contains a feature called the Carto Mixer that was created by Jim Graham and Chris Muhl, an HSU student. The feature makes it very easy to create true shaded reflief images and save them as georeferenced raster files. The Carto Mixer also allows a great deal of flexiblity including making it easy to create shaded reliefs of images that mix terrain above and below water.

To get started, just drag and drop a DEM into BlueSpray. Right click on the raster layer in the table of contents and select "Transforms: Cartography -> Carto Mixer". In the dialog that appears, select Help for additional information.
