The Humboldt State University Marine Mammal Stranding Program official website was created by Humboldt State University students enrolled in Dr. Graham's GSP 470 course. The goal for this project was to create a professional website for scientists, students, general public, and those needing to report a marine mammal stranding. Essentials for the HSU MMSP site included an interactive stranding's map with survey data (CeNCOOS) and observation data (NOAA), email submission for stranding information, an option to display and edit stranding data, a mobile friendly platform. The website was created using Pingendo software (https://pingendo.com/) Further edits should be made using this software. Pingendo has specific formatting and editing (BootStrap) so it is highly recommended. HTML, CSS, and JavaScript were incorporated. Below you'll find brief descrpitions of the web pages that were created: Home Page (home.html) A brief summary of the HSU MMSP group is given. Describes the team they work with to make a difference in the community. Their goal is to advance science, education and public awarness of marine mammals. The home page has three buttons: HOW TO HELP A STRANDED MARINE MAMMAL, REPORT A STRANDED MRINE MAMMAL, DONATE NOW (Button 1) HOW TO HELP A STRANDED MARINE MAMMAL (action.html) They give safety guidlines and practical steps to take if you do encounter a stranded mammal. Then the website give specifics for how to report a dead marine mammal, a sick marine mammal, or a whale entangled at sea. Then the article ends with explanation of illegal actions. (Button 2) REPORT A STRANDED MARINE MAMMAL (report.html) Here you simply find a submission form for finding a stranded marine life mammal. (Button) SUBMISSION FORM (google doc form) Leads you to a form to fill out and hoe to upload photos for discovery of a marine mammal sighting. (Button 3) DONATE NOW (giving/hsu) Leads to a form a potential donator can fill out and donate to this project of rescuing marine mammals. The form asks for details and gives one the option to donate a one time gift or a recurring gift. About Page (Tab 1) PEOPLE (people.html) This tab we find a description of the leadership of this program. Listed we find Dr. Dawn Goley, Allison Lui and Dr. Melissa Hawkins. All three have their education in Biological Sciences and are heavely involved in this program for rescuing marine mammals. (Tab 2) ABOUT THE HSU MARINE MAMMAL STRANDING PROGRAM (aboutus.html) This leads to a description of the components of HSU MMSP. Three steps are shown: 1.Respond to a dead stranded marine mammal in Del Norte, Humboldt and northern Mendocino counties 2. Effort based monitoring of local beaches. 3.Scientific investigation of stranding patterns. This tab also give a history of this program when it was established and how. Lastly, this tab gives the components of a rescue. Listed they are 1.Response 2.Effort-based monitoring 3.Investigation (Tab 3) ABOUT THE HSU MARINE MAMMAL EDUCATION AND RESEARCH PROGRAM (MMERP.html) This tab leads us to a description of the history of MMERP. Then we see a list of the projects currently running with the MMERP. These include: Gray Whale Biology and Steller Sea Lions. Following this we see a list of the MMERP alumni who are Stephani (Holzwarth) Gordon, Erin Moreland, Ryan Jenkinson, Allison Fuller and Misty Niemeyer. Lastly, the page includes a section for all the MMERP interns. (Tab 4) OUR PARTNERS (partners.html) Here we are lead to a list of all of HSU MMSP's partnerships. Specifically, their partenerships with stranding programs, effort based monitoring programs, geospatial analysis, website design and HSU vertebrate museum. What to do page (action.html) This page is the same as the button 1 how to help a stranded marine mammal. Map page (mappage.html) Here we find a map of recorded strandings. The data incorporated includes both survey data (CeNCOOS) and observation data (NOAA). It displays dates, descriptions, and photos (when available). The map was built using CanvasMap. Data page (data.html) Here we find a comprehensive list of all strandings in the area. It gives details like the name, the age, the gender and length of the marine mammal. Data within this table is raw data, anyone wishing to use this must inquire with the HSU MMSP first. Educate page (educate.html) (Tab 1) COMMON MARINE MAMMALS OF THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST (educate.html) Here we find a list of all the local and common marine mammals of the pacific northwest and includes photos, scientific name and a link to learn more about each. Listed they are the northern fur seal, harbor seal, steller sea lion, northern elephant seal, california sea lion, guadalupe fur seal, harbor porpoise, and a gray whale. (Tab 2) FACTORS AFFECTING MARINE MAMMALS (factors.html) This tab leads to a list of different challenges marine mammals are facing today and there causes. Including: Leptospirosis, Demoic Acid Poisoning, Sound Disturbance, Toxic Seas, Ship Strikes, Marine Debris, Climate Change and Entanglement and Bycatch. (Tab 3) MARINE MAMMAL SCIENCE (mammalscience.html) Here we find a description of the field of marine mammology and how to become a marine mammal scientist. (Tab 4) HSU MMSP OUTREACH AND EDUCATION (outreach.html) This tab shows where Dr. Goley has spoken about the HSU MMSP's program. Interns speak at different K-12 school events. HSU MMSP also has used local media to educate. You Can Help! page (youcanhelp.html) Information on donating and volunteering. Contact us page (contactus.html) General contact page. Website Template (template.html) This page controls the format for the login, register now, forgot password, and forgot password pages. Login and registration process Anyone can register, but they must request permission from a project manager to access or edit stranding data. Website Design Team (WebDesignTeam.html) Background information on students who worked on the project. Contact information is available here for future questions regarding the project. Future edits: All photos used on the site still need to be credited (mostly HSU, NOAA and TMMC) Make a HSU MMSP logo (adobe illustrator) Make login on navbar white Possibly hide the data page from the public Make the program director (Dawn Goley) a project manager so she can approve or deny people to access/edit stranding data Work on the page meant for editing stranding data An option for the user to pin their location to lead to better reporting Email submission without the need for a Google account to make the process easier for the user
